Beast of Reincarnation: Everything We Know About the Ambitious RPG from the Creators of Pokémon

When people hear the name Game Freak, most gamers immediately think of the Pokémon series. The Japanese developers have made a name for themselves with it, but alongside their iconic RPGs, they have also been working for years on completely new projects outside this franchise. Beast of Reincarnation is their most ambitious title to date outside the Pokémon universe, and it’s also the game with which they aim to prove that they can succeed with a game that doesn’t feature ‘pocket monsters’.

Beast of Reincarnation takes players to a post-apocalyptic Japan, where humanity finds itself on the brink of extinction. The main heroine is Emma, who, together with her faithful canine companion Koo, sets out on a perilous journey across a land rife with monsters and a mysterious plague. Their goal is to find a way to stop the endless cycle of this plague and bring new hope to the world. The game is built around battles that combine real-time action combat with tactical elements, aiming to offer an experience distinct from traditional action RPGs.

Development of Beast of Reincarnation began around 2020, and during this time Game Freak gradually shaped what is to date its largest non-Pokémon production. Although it is not an open-world game, the developers have not opted for a strictly linear progression either. The individual areas are set to be significantly more expansive than the levels in games such as Devil May Cry, offering more scope for exploration. The result will be a compromise between a linear adventure and an open world, providing players with plenty of freedom without unnecessarily dragging out the pace. If you’d like to find out more about this ambitious project, you’ve come to the right place.

Beast of Reincarnation – Release Date and Platforms

The brand-new action RPG from Game Freak is almost here, and after several years of development and a gradual reveal of details, the developers have at last confirmed the exact release date; the game will be available on all major current-generation platforms. The good news is that Xbox Game Pass subscribers will also be able to play it on the day of release.

Beast of Reincarnation is due for release on 4 August 2026 on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be the very first game from Game Freak to be released on both PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as the studio’s previous work has been closely tied primarily to Nintendo platforms.

Interestingly, the game was originally unveiled back in 2023 under the working title Project Bloom. At that time, it was a joint project between Game Freak and the publisher Private Division; the public had seen only a single concept image and knew only that the game was slated for release in 2026. It was not until the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 that the project was given its final title, Beast of Reincarnation, and its first gameplay trailer. The definitive release date was subsequently announced by the publisher, Fictions, during the PlayStation State of Play presentation in February 2026.

Beast of Reincarnation – Price and Editions

Beast of Reincarnation will be available in two digital editions. The Standard Edition will cost €54.99, whilst players who pre-order the game will receive a brown Shiba skin for Koo the dog and 30,000 Amber – the in-game currency – as a bonus.

More ambitious players can opt for the Digital Deluxe Edition for €63.99. In addition to the game itself, it includes two cosmetic skins for Koo (brown and black Shiba), Oni’s Hat for Emma, the exclusive Big Dipper sword, up to 100,000 Amber and a pack of various seeds for growing. The Deluxe Edition is therefore aimed primarily at players who want to enter the world of Beast of Reincarnation with a few extra bonus items and get the most out of the experience.

Beast of Reincarnation – The Story

The world of Beast of Reincarnation has nothing to do with a peaceful future. The story is set in the year 4026, when Japan was engulfed by a mysterious plague capable of transforming the landscape into wild forests teeming with deadly creatures. Civilisation is crumbling, people live in constant fear, and very few are willing to venture beyond the borders of the last safe zones.

At the centre of events is Emma, a young warrior born with traces of this plague in her own body. It is thanks to this that she can control plants and absorb the power of defeated enemies, yet at the same time it has robbed her of part of her own identity. Memories and emotions have all but vanished from her life, and amongst other people she is seen more as an outcast than a heroine. And her mission? To hunt down dangerous creatures known as Malefacts, absorb their infection and gradually acquire new abilities that will help her in the fight against even greater threats.

On her journey, Emma encounters Koo, a mysterious creature who belongs to this very group of beings considered enemies of humanity. Instead of fighting each other, however, they form an unexpected alliance and set off together across the ravaged landscape to the very source of the infection. Their opponents will include not only ordinary monsters, but also the gigantic Nushi, whose defeat is essential to uncovering the truth about the source of the plague – the Beast of Reincarnation – and to its complete eradication from the world.

The developers also promise a story that will not rely solely on spectacular battles. Throughout their adventure, players will gradually uncover the main characters’ pasts, meet new allies and piece together the secrets of a world where nothing is as it seems at first glance. The atmosphere is further heightened by a mysterious legend warning of a single rule – never look up at the sky.

Beast of Reincarnation – Gameplay

The developers don’t want Beast of Reincarnation to be just another action RPG based on rapid button-mashing. The core concept of the gameplay is the collaboration between Emma and her faithful companion Koo, with each battle designed to reward the player not only for quick reflexes but also for sound tactical decisions. The developers themselves therefore describe their new game as a “one-person, one-dog action RPG”, where both protagonists are equally important parts of the combat.

In practice, you’ll spend most of your time controlling Emma, who fights using a katana and plant-based abilities. But that’s not all. Precise timing of defences is also a key mechanic – successful parries not only create an opening for a counter-attack but also fill the gauge needed to use Koo’s abilities. What’s more, when you open his command menu, the action slows down briefly, allowing you to think through your next move and select the ability that will be most effective in that situation. It is precisely this system that combines the dynamics of action games with the tactical planning familiar from classic RPGs.

An important part of the gameplay will also be gradually developing your own playstyle. Emma will acquire new katanas and additional gear, whilst Koo will expand his arsenal of abilities and support techniques. There are also Spirit Stones, which alter how individual mechanics work and allow you to create various combinations focused, for example, on aggressive close-quarters combat, a more stealthy approach, or ranged attacks. The developers have also confirmed that defeating bosses will grant new abilities, opening up further possibilities in combat and when exploring the world.

The world itself will not be open-world in the traditional sense. Beast of Reincarnation will feature extensive interconnected locations designed to offer more scope for exploration than classic linear action games, whilst maintaining the story’s brisk pace. Players can therefore look forward to a balance between an open world and a linear adventure, with each new area bringing its own challenges, secrets and majestic enemies, the defeat of which will advance the story a step further.

Interesting Facts & Tips and Tricks

  • Beast of Reincarnation will be a single-player-only title; there is no multiplayer mode.
  • Fans of Black Myth: Wukong, Nier: Automata and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will appreciate the combat system – as it is reminiscent of those very games.
  • The game combines dynamic katana combat with tactical control of Koo, the player’s canine companion.
  • Successfully parrying attacks earns points needed to activate Koo’s special abilities.
  • When the command menu is opened, combat slows down, allowing the player to choose their next move more calmly.
  • Spirit Stones can alter characters’ behaviour during combat and significantly influence playstyle.
  • The game offers three difficulty levels, including Story Mode with easier attack parrying and weaker enemies.
  • The individual levels are divided into zones, with a powerful Nushi awaiting in each one; defeating them opens the way forward. The zones vary in size, density and elevation, but they are all designed as wide, relatively straightforward routes that encourage exploration using plant-based abilities.
  • Before facing a Nushi, the player has fewer opportunities to prepare than when fighting groups of golems. Once the battle begins, success depends primarily on the correct timing and sequence of Koo’s powerful Bloom Arts abilities.
  • The game deliberately pits vibrant, dynamic nature against lifeless-looking ruins inhabited by Golems, whilst in battles against large groups of enemies, it allows players to utilise stealthy elimination, long-range shooting, frontal attacks and plant-based abilities to gain an advantageous position.
  • A forest afflicted by the plague can transform open plains into dense woodland in the blink of an eye, demonstrating that the enemies are not just monsters, but the ever-changing world itself. The developers therefore rely not only on the static beauty of the environment, but above all on its living, dynamic and menacing transformations.
